Biography:
Roger Carroll grew up on a farm in the Walnut and Avoca area. After attending country schools, he graduated from Walnut High School in 1967. He was active in sports, FFA, and 4-H and generous with his time and talent. Carroll attended the winter term at Iowa State University 1968-69 and then entered the Army in February 1969. His tour in Vietnam began in June with the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry in Tay Ninh Province. On October 30, Specialist 4th Class Carroll was in a forward security position when he came upon an enemy ambush being set up. He was killed when he single handedly attacked the enemy to prevent it from consolidating their position. He received the Distinguished Service Cross for his bravery. He was buried in Graceland Cemetery in Avoca.
