Biography:
Wayne County native Roger Wayne McClatchey grew up in Corydon. He was drafted by the Army and was sent to South Vietnam in August 1968. He served as an infantryman with the 198th Infantry, Americal Division. SP4 McClatchey was killed on December 22, 1968 while in the Quang Tin Province. While on a guard assignment a fellow serviceman’s grenade launcher accidently discharged striking SP4 McClatchey in the head. The grenade did not explode. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with Merit. McClatchey was 20 years old at the time of his death. His body was returned to the United States and buried in the Vernon Cemetery in York, NE.
