Biography:
Ronald Allen Yashack grew up in rural Diagonal in Ringgold County. He graduated from Diagonal High School in the class of 1966. He also attended Southwestern Community College in Creston. He was drafted by the Army in September 1968 and sent to South Vietnam the following February. Yashack served as an infantryman in the 198th Infantry, Americal Division. Yashack was killed on May 24, 1969 when his position experienced an enemy mortar attack. His photograph was featured in the 1969 LIFE magazine cover article entitled "The Faces of the American Dead in Vietnam: One Week's Toll.” Yashack was 21 years old at the time of his death. The young Iowan’s body was buried at the Diagonal Cemetery in his hometown.
