Biography:
Ronald John Johnson was born in Cherokee and raised in Quimby where he was a graduate of Willow High School in the class of 1963. He then attended the University of South Dakota for two years. Before being drafted into the Army on February 1, 1967 Johnson worked at Collins Radio Company in Cedar Rapids before entering the service. He completed basic training as a platoon leader at Fort Polk, LA and arrived in Vietnam in July 1967. On February 2, 1968 SGT Johnson died from a wound he suffered from hostile fire during a combat operation near Quang Tin. A funeral service with full military rites was held at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee. His body was buried at the Quimby Cemetery.
