Biography:
Ronald Marvin Stein was born in Vinton in 1946. Later his family moved to Dysart and then to Maquoketa. Stein graduated from Maquoketa High School in the class of 1965. He then moved to Waterloo and worked for the Waterloo Corrugated Box Company. He entered the Marine Corps in February 1966 and completed his training at Camp Pendleton, CA. In August 1966 Stein arrived in South Vietnam. On May 9, 1967 CPL Stein was killed by multiple small arms and shrapnel wounds when his unit engaged the enemy in the vicinity of Huong Hoa, South Vietnam. Twenty four Americans were killed in the skirmish. A memorial service was held at the Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart before he was buried in the local cemetery.
