Biography:
Ronald Ray Sagers was born on May 8, 1945 in Maquoketa. As a youth he enjoyed game hunting and trapping. He wrestled at the University of Dubuque for two years and graduated in 1968. He then got married to a Dubuque native after completing school. In October 1968 Sagers was drafted into the Army and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. He started his tour in Southeast Asia in November 1969, and served with the 1st Air Cavalry Division. SSGT Sagers was killed by fragmentation wounds along the Cambodian border on May 22, 1970. His body was returned to Iowa and buried at the East Iron Cemetery in Jackson County.
