Biography:
Russell Scully grew up in Ottumwa where he attended school and graduated from high school in 1968. He worked for a time at Dad’s Root Beer and the Philco plant in Fairfield before entering the Army in October 1969. His tour in Vietnam began May 5, 1970 with the 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry in Quang Ngai Province. Private First Class Scully was killed by mortar fire while in a night defensive position near Chu Lai. He was buried in Shaul Cemetery in Ottumwa.
