Biography:
Russell Thomas Pickering grew up in Des Moines before joining the Army. He was described as a “bright, dedicated, and likable person.” He completed Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, GA. 2LT Pickering was sent to Vietnam in October 1969 and was assigned as a platoon leader in D Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division. A fellow serviceman described Pickering as “a very competent combat leader, who always worried about the safety of his men.” 2LT Pickering was wounded during combat on December 2, 1969 in the Binh Dinh Province. As he was dying he was continuing to instruct his fellow soldiers. Russell Pickering was 24 years old at the time of his death and he left behind a young wife. His body was buried at the Pine Hill Cemetery in Des Moines.
