Stanley Dennis Ross
U.S. Army
Specialist 4 [E-4]
Biography:
Stanley Dennis Ross was a “farm kid” from Mt. Pleasant who brought his work ethic and commitment to service to Vietnam. He began his deployment in April 1969. In his letters home he expressed his admiration for fellow soldiers in the 199th Brigade and his frustration at how the war was fought. At the time of his death on October 20, 1969, he had become a hardened veteran squad leader, deeply respected and loved by his men. SP4 Ross was killed when an enemy force was encountered on the south bank of the Suoi Quit River in the Long Khanh Province. His experience was captured in his sister’s book, With Love Stan, based on his letters. Ross was 20 years old at the time of his death and was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star. His body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.
