Biography:
Stephen Abram Rushing was born in Gainesville, FL and later moved to Ames with his family. He was a 1967 graduate of Ames High School where he was a member of the track and debate teams. He then attended Iowa State University before he was drafted into the Army in June 1969. SGT Rushing completed training and began his tour in Vietnam in May of the following year. He was killed about two months into his tour on July 30, 1970 while combating hostile forces in Binh Dinh Province. A funeral service for the 20-year-old was held at Saint John’s By-the-Campus Episcopal Church in Ames and his body was buried at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park in Tampa, FL.
