Biography:
Stephen Craig Hass grew up in rural Gladbrook in Tama County. As a young man he enjoyed playing the guitar. He graduated from Garwin High School in the class of 1966. Hass then was drafted into the Army and served as in infantryman when he was sent to Vietnam in April 1967. PFC Hass was killed on June 21, 1967 during Operation Billings. The fatal injury occurred when a grenade attached to his belt accidently detonated. The 19-year-old’s body was buried at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Gladbrook.
