Biography:
Stephen Lee Woodard was raised in Waterloo and graduated from West High School in the class of 1965. As a teenager he participated in extra-curricular activities such as basketball and chorus. Woodard was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He attended the University of Northern Iowa and worked for the Diesch Construction Company before being inducted into the Army in 1967. He completed his basic training at Fort Bliss, TX and was then transferred to Fort Knox, KY and assigned to the 101st Airborne Division. After only three weeks in Vietnam, PFC Woodard was killed on May 16, 1968 when the medical truck in which he was riding hit a land mine near Hue. PFC Woodard was 21 years old and engaged to be married at the time of his death.
