Biography:
Steven Allen Mathers was born in Charles City and grew up in Rockwell. He entered the Army in September 1967 and was sent to Vietnam in February 1968. SGT Mathers served as an infantryman with the 1st Infantry Division or “Big Red 1.” On October 26, 1968 his unit was attacked by enemy forces near Katum Special Forces Camp. SGT Mathers was killed by wounds received during the engagement. A funeral service was held at Saint Peters Lutheran Church and his body was buried at the Rockwell Cemetery.
