Biography:
Steven Clayton Scott grew up in Elkhart and graduated from North Polk High School in the class of 1967. Scott was drafted by the Army in March 1969 and was assigned to the 196th Light Infantry Brigade. SP4 Scott was sent to South Vietnam in August 1969. He served over one year in Vietnam before he was killed on August 13, 1970. He died when his company was conducting a routine combat operation when they encountered a large North Vietnamese Army force. During the engagement SP4 Scott provided covering fire while his comrades retreated to safety, for his actions he was posthumously awarded two Bronze Stars. The 21-year-old Iowan was buried at the Elkhart Cemetery in Polk County.
