Biography:
Steven Douglas McDowell graduated Keokuk Senior High School in the class of 1968. After high school McDowell was drafted by the Army and trained to be a medical corpsman. PFC McDowell started a tour in Southeast Asia in November 1970. He served as medic in the Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry, 198th Infantry Brigade in the Americal Division. PFC McDowell was killed on February 9, 1971 while investigating an enemy tunnel when a booby trap exploded. He was transported to a military hospital via medevac and expired later that day. McDowell was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and promoted to corporal. A funeral service was held at the Trinity United Methodist Church and the 20-year-old was buried with full military rites in the Keokuk National Cemetery.
