Biography:
Steven Dwight Sears grew up in Webster City and graduated high school in the class of 1965. He enlisted in the Navy out of Fort Dodge in March 1966. He wanted to be a Navy Corpsman and started his training in San Diego, CA. Sears completed his corpsman training at Camp Pendleton, CA. He shipped out for South Vietnam in June 1967 and on November 1 of the same year, Steven Sears died in a Danang hospital. He was fatally wounded after tripping a land mine in a rice paddy. A medivac chopper airlifted Sears and a platoon sergeant who was also injured by a booby trap to the hospital where he died of his injuries. Steven Sears' body was returned to Iowa and services were held in Pocahontas and later at the Church of Christ in Webster City. He was buried in Graceland Cemetery with full military rites. Sears was 20 years old and married at the time of his death.
