Biography:
Guttenberg native Steven Michael Torrey was drafted by the Army in August 1969. He completed his trainings and deployed to Southeast Asia in January 1970 with the 1st Cavalry Division. In the April of 1970 U.S. forces were conducting operations near the border of Cambodia, and eventually mounted missions into Cambodia in May. CPL Torrey’s unit was fighting near the Cambodian, in the Tay Ninh Province, when he was killed on April 5, 1970. His unit’s position was ambushed by the enemy in the vicinity of Landing Zone Blondin. He died of wounds inflicted by enemy gunfire. The 20-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Guttenberg City Cemetery.
