Biography:
Steven Thurlow Jewell was born in Coon Rapids in Carroll County and attended school in Council Bluffs. He enlisted in the Army in 1964, and completed training on several different military bases in the United States before beginning his tour in Vietnam on November 5, 1965. SP4 Jewell was in action near Bien Hoa Province in South Vietnam on January 26, 1966 when he was killed by non-hostile fire just days before his 19th birthday. Funeral services were held at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and burial took place at Maple Grove Cemetery, both located in Audubon.
