Biography:
Thomas Alan Porter was raised in Bremer County and graduated from Waverly-Shell Rock High School in the class of 1967. He worked for the Waterloo Water Works and attended Hawkeye Institute of Technology where he graduated from the power mechanics program. Porter joined the Army in March 1969 and was sent to Vietnam in November of that year. While on an offensive patrol his unit encountered an enemy force. He was killed on February 20, 1970. Initially reported to have gone missing, the Army later confirmed PFC Porter’s death. Porter was posthumously promoted to Corporal. He was 21 years old at the time of his death and he was buried at Reinbeck Cemetery in Reinbeck.
