Biography:
Thomas Allen Nebel was born July 3, 1948. He attended West Liberty School District before moving to Keota with his family in 1962. Nebel graduated from Keota High School in 1968. He attended a technical school in St. Louis, MO for two years. When he finished school he moved back to Iowa to work as a draftsman for Frantz Construction in Iowa City. He was drafted into the Army in October 1968 and served as an infantryman. PFC Nebel arrived in Vietnam in April 1969. He was assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 60th Infantry in the 9th Infantry Division. A little over a month after arriving in theater, on May 28, 1969 PFC Nebel was wounded in action when his unit encountered a hostile force. He was sent to a military hospital in Vietnam and soon evacuated to Japan. While at a hospital in Japan, PFC Nebel died of his injuries. Services for the 20-year-old soldier were held at St. Joseph’s Church in Wellman, IA. He was buried at the Fern Cliff Cemetery in Washington, IA.
