Biography:
Thomas Jerome Dostal grew up in Iowa City. He attended Saint Patrick’s Elementary School, Regina High School, and studied at the University of Iowa. He graduated from the University of Iowa in the class of 1968 and proceeded to join the Army. In February 1969 Dostal graduated from Officer Candidate School at Fort Sill, OK. Second Lieutenant Dostal was sent to South Vietnam in April 1969. He was a Forward Observer from Battery D, 2nd Battalion, 13th Artillery, 23rd Artillery Group serving with the Vietnamese 3rd Mobile Strike Force. 2LT Dostal died on August 25, 1969 while landing in a hot landing zone during Operation Bull Run I. His remains were returned to Iowa and buried at the Saint Joseph’s Cemetery in Iowa City. Dostal was 24 years old at the time of his death.
