Biography:
Des Moines native Tim Edwin Newell graduated from Tech High School in the class of 1964. He worked for the Carr Class and Paint Company before being drafted by the Army. SP4 Newell started a twelve month tour in January 1970. In Vietnam he was assigned to a scout dog platoon with the 101st Airborne Division. On September 9, 1970 SP4 Newell and his scout dog Blackie were leading a platoon across a landing zone when a sniper opened fire. SP4 Newell and a fellow soldier were wounded, additionally the dog Blackie was missing in action and presumed killed. SP4 Newell was evacuated to a medical hospital where he later expired due to his injuries. He was posthumously promoted to Sergeant. The 24-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Des Moines.
