Biography:
Tommy Duane Knapp’s hometown of record was Des Moines, yet when he was killed in 1968 his family lived in Newton. SSG Knapp had been serving for over 3 years when he deployed to South Vietnam in February 1968. He was killed on April 4, 1968 from fragmentation wounds sustained in a firefight with the enemy. He was most immediately transported to the 24th Evacuation Hospital where he expired shortly after arriving. The 21-year-old’s body was buried at the Newton Union Cemetery.
