Biography:
Vance Martin Evans was born in Creston as his father managed the Creston Coal and Materials Co. before the family moved to Altoona when Evans was 6 years old. He grew up in Altoona before joining the Army. He arrived in South Vietnam in April 1969 and was assigned to Company E, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry also known as the Wolfhounds. He was a Heavy Anti-armor Weapons Infantryman. SP4 Evans was killed on October 23, 1969 when the vehicle he was aboard struck a mine near Saigon. He was posthumously promoted to Sergeant. Evans was unmarried and his body was buried in the Altoona Cemetery.
