Biography:
Vernard Jay Small was born and raised in Akron. He graduated in 1952 from Akron High School where he was an excellent football player and student. Small joined the Marine Corps in November 1958 and served four tours overseas in Japan and Vietnam. Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) Small was killed on July 31, 1965 when his plane crashed into the Danang Harbor. He attempted to land his damaged plane on the USS <i>Genesee</i> that was anchored in Danang Harbor but could not make it in time. A funeral service was held at Immanuel Lutheran Church and his body was buried at Riverside Cemetery, both located in Akron. CWO Small was the first casualty of the Vietnam War from Plymouth County. He left behind a wife and two young children.
