Biography:
Warren Everett Phillips grew up in Oskaloosa in Mahaska County. Phillips joined the Army and served as an infantryman in the 101st Airborne Division. He started a 12 month tour in July 1965. SP4 Phillips was killed on January 29, 1966 while participating in Operation Van Buren. He died from a gunshot wound to the head while in the Phu Yen Province, South Vietnam. He was posthumously promoted to sergeant and awarded the Purple Heart. Phillips was 19 years old at the time of his death. His body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Garrett Cemetery in rural Delta, IA.
