Biography:
Wayne Gene Hubbard was born in 1949 and grew up in Davenport. A childhood friend remembers “Wayne for his kindness, easy laugh and his beloved '57 Chevy!” Hubbard was drafted by the U.S. Army and he achieved the rank of Specialist 4. SP4 Hubbard trained as an infantryman and was deployed to South Vietnam in September 1969. He served with Company C, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry in the 1st Infantry Division, or the “Big Red 1.” SP4 Hubbard was killed on November 9, 1969 while serving in the Binh Duong Province, South Vietnam. His fatal injuries were sustained when a mine inadvertently detonated during a mission. He was married and 20 years old at the time of his death. His body was returned to the United States and buried at the Rock Island National Cemetery in Illinois.
