Biography:
Bettendorf native Wayne Richard Anderson enlisted in the Navy in November 1967. He trained as a hospital corpsman (HM) and was assigned to a Marine as a medic. HM Anderson was sent to South Vietnam in June 1970 and was assigned to the 1st Marine Division. Four days into his tour he was killed in action. HM Anderson died from wounds inflicted by an enemy booby trap. He was 22 years old at the time of his death and unmarried. His body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Mount Vernon Cemetery in Mount Vernon.
