Biography:
Wayne William Gross was born and raised in Carroll, where he graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School in 1959. He then attended St. Louis University in St. Louis, MO where he earned a degree in biology in 1965. Gross joined the Marine Corps Reserves before entering grad school in 1966. He earned a Master’s degree in farm economics from Iowa State University in 1967. 2LT Gross arrived in Vietnam in early July 1968. On August 19 his platoon was under attack south of the Demilitarized Zone in the Quang Tri Province when Gross was shot by an enemy sniper while he instructed his troops to take cover. His burial took place at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery. Gross left behind a newly married wife.
