Biography:
Wilbur Glen Kirchoff of Marcus graduated from the then named Marcus Community High School in the class of 1959. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on July 4, 1959. He was awarded the Navy-Marine Corps medal in 1963 after he saved a fellow marine in a parachute jumping drill. The sergeant was sent to Vietnam in November 1965. On March 4, 1966 SGT Kirchoff died as a result of fragmentation wounds he suffered to his head during an attack against the Viet Cong near Danang. A funeral and burial took place at Trinity Lutheran Church and Cemetery in Marcus. He was the first casualty of the Vietnam War from Cherokee County, and he left behind a wife and young daughter.
