Biography:
William David Thorpe of Jesup was a student at Jesup Community High School before he enlisted in the Army. He began his tour in Vietnam in December 1969 serving as a field artillery basic. On August 26, 1970 he was a passenger on a military aircraft when it was hit by enemy fire, causing it to crash in Quang Tin Province. Everyone on board the aircraft was killed except the pilot. A funeral service was held at the Jesup Methodist Church and his body was buried at Cedar Crest Cemetery. SP4 Thorpe was 19 years old at the time of his death.
