Biography:
William “Billy” Follon grew up on a farm near Everly in Clay County. He graduated in 1965, married his high school sweetheart and then enlisted in the Air Force in February 1966. Sergeant Follon trained as a heavy equipment operator and spent time maintaining and repairing runways at Phu Cat air base. He was killed while waiting to board his flight home on February 2, 1970. Shrapnel from an enemy rocket careened off a steel beam and struck him in the back of his head. Despite immediate hospitalization, he died from the wounds, the only one of the 50 in the airport waiting room to sustain injury. He was survived by his wife and two daughters. Sergeant Follon was buried North Lawn Cemetery in Spencer.
