Biography:
William Frank Golliday grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Lincoln High School in the class of 1966. Classmates described him as “big . . . both in heart and stature.” He attended Grand View College before he was drafted by the Army in May 1968. He trained as an infantryman and was sent to Southeast Asia in April 1969. CPL Golliday was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division and stationed at Forward Support Base Berchtesgaden. On August 24, 1969 his base was attacked by an enemy force. Golliday and two other Americans were killed during the engagement. The 20-year-old’s body was returned to Iowa and buried at the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Des Moines.
