Biography:
William Fredrick Freestone of Des Moines served in the Marine Corps for over 17 years when he was killed in 1966. Before going to Vietnam he had been a senior drill instructor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. He was serving as a combat engineer during a mine clearing operation on Hill 65 when he received multiple wounds on July 1, 1966. 2LT Freestone died four days later from his injuries. His body was buried at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego.
