Biography:
William Jay Balfour of Toledo was a member of the football and basketball teams at South Tama High School. He also a member of FFA, earning several awards. After graduating in 1964 Balfour enlisted in the Marine Corps. He received training as a military policeman at Camp Pendleton, CA. CPL Balfour served a year at Pearl Harbor with a security company while taking courses in mathematics and aerial map reading before beginning his tour in Vietnam. On September 21, 1967 CPL Balfour suffered a fatal gunshot wound to his neck while on a military operation south of the DMZ in Quang Tri Province. His body was buried with full military rites at Crystal Township Cemetery in Garwin.
