Biography:
William Richard Mohrhauser grew up in rural Woodbury County and graduated from Danbury Catholic High School in the class of 1966. After finishing school he worked for the Bell Telephone Company in Sioux City. In the spring of 1968 the 19-year-old was drafted by the Army. After completing infantry training SP4 Mohrhauser was sent to South Vietnam in September 1968. That December he was wounded and received a Purple Heart. He returned to his unit and was killed on January 26, 1969. SP4 Mohrhauser was fatally wounded when an enemy force was encountered while on an operation in the Tay Ninh Province. His body was returned to Iowa and laid to rest at the Saint Mary’s Cemetery in his hometown of Danbury. He was 20 years old and had served less than 8 months in the military at the time of his death.
