Biography:
Marshalltown native William Russell McKibben was killed on April 25, 1970 in South Vietnam. CAPT McKibben served in a helicopter unit with the 1st Aviation Brigade. He deployed to Southeast Asia in August 1965. He was killed while piloting a Huey helicopter north of the Ben Het Village in the Kontum Province. The chopper experienced small arms fire, crashed, then burned. CAPT Mckibben was initially reported as missing, yet his remains were recovered and returned home in June 1970. Three other Americans died in the crash. The 26-year-old was buried at the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Marshalltown. He left behind a wife and a daughter.
